The five levels of AI maturity
Level 1 – Individual Exploration
Individual users work with their own tools, such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, or Gemini. There are no shared practices or governance. These are experiments rather than production use.
Level 2 – Managed Use
IT-managed, secure shared use. The organization has defined permitted tools and guidelines. Use is broad but not yet tied to specific processes.
Level 3 – Process Solutions
AI is connected to specific business processes, such as RAG retrieval from your own documents, custom agents, or process-specific solutions. The benefit becomes measurable.
Level 4 – Integrated Automation
AI is connected to production workflows and business systems such as ERP and CRM. Automations, API integrations, and real-time data connections operate systematically, reducing manual work in a measurable way.
Level 5 – AI-Driven Operations
AI is embedded in leadership, reporting, and decision-making across the organization. There are metrics for AI use, clear ownership, and governance, and the organization continuously develops its AI capabilities.
Where most organizations are today
The majority of organizations sit at levels 1–2: individual experiments, and IT provides basic access.
Real competitive advantage usually appears in the move to level 3 and on to levels 4–5, when AI begins to connect to your own processes and data.
The assessment in practice
The assessment itself takes 30–45 minutes and is a two-way conversation rather than a presentation. No preparation is required, and nothing needs to be sent in advance.
From there, the path is yours to choose. A typical light start is a single pilot of six to ten weeks with no commitment, which is usually enough to show whether the benefit is real for you. Heavier programs such as integrations, RAG, or agents belong to levels 3–4 and fit once the foundation is in place.
